‘Strong Interest’ in Zanzibar’s Fast-Track Frontier Bid Round

A top official in Zanzibar, an autonomous part of Tanzania, is optimistic that that the territory’s just-launched debut offshore licensing round will be a success, partly because, as far back as mid-2023, companies were already expressing interest in the acreage set to be offered.

This fast-track, eight-block licensing round was launched last month in Stonetown, Zanzibar’s capital, with full support from President Hussain Ali Mwinyi.

Speaking to Upstream on a webcall last week, Adam Makame, Managing Director of the Zanzibar Petroleum Regulatory Authority (ZPRA), said that in July last year, after it had completed resource studies and demarcated the blocks, companies were already knocking at its door.
